Do you bouncing back with resilience when adversity strikes you? If not, you have to.

SUNDAY SOLILOQUY:

"Thank God, the darkest period of the night is just always before dawn!

You are not the only one on this planet who has had the same feeling of despair and worthlessness. I am sure, each one of us has felt that way at some point in our lives, and might get into the same feeling again.

And as Winston Churchill has famously said that “Keep going even if you are going through the hell.” In order to reach heaven, you must

struggle to pass through  hell. Paulo Coelho, the Brazilian lyricist, and novelist; advises us to never lose hope and “if your heart becomes tired just walk with your legs.”

Remember that our mind is always giving us bad news and it thrives on the negativity but if you can learn to ignore the bullshit that your mind tells you, you are the real winner. Being hopeless to the point of losing all the desire to live is an insult to our very being. And there is no other recourse except to stare life in the eyes with all the courage and bravery that one can amass in one’s heart.

Following words from the “Absurd Courage of Choosing to Live”, Alburt Camus gives us the right clue:

“Killing oneself is an unwarranted ‘insult to existence’, even though life is painful.

Camus is keenly aware of the sorrows and struggles of human life; he knows that it can be exhausting, repetitive, anxious, and depressing, but he concludes that once we fully recognize the absurdity of it, a kind of love and joy arise. We should, Camus writes, “Accept that our desires do not match up with the world as we know it, and yet love the unanswerable strangeness of it all”.

Do you find you do the same? If you do, you are not alone as I find this a common trend with everyone. The reason is that they think that either there is no resilience in them to bounce back or they are too attached, to the loss without reasoning for themselves.

And that’s when ‘Resilience’, becomes the happy knack of being able to bungy-jump through the pitfalls of life. I love this definition because it helps me to focus on the positive gifts I find in my adversities, rather than labouring under their weight. That I can, if I learn to use my ability to bounce, leverage both the positive and negative within the situation to help me to keep moving so I don’t become stuck. I realised how much I underestimate my abilities and capabilities – especially my strengths when it comes to resilience. Patience, courage, and steadfastness are some of the most powerful tools and part of resilience to fight all odds. Contrary to popular opinion, everyone has resilience. We are born with it. It is an invisible invincible force within us that can charter a new destination while we search for better solutions during adversities.

However, it is our responsibility to nurture and develop it. The results of doing this can be pretty life-changing. We are 31% more productive in positive than in negative, neutral, or stressed. For this bouncing back, we all need the inspirations to keep us going – especially when the going gets tough, inspirations from friends, family, books and music are the other means to alleviate our sufferings of the soul. That is how muscles can be added to Resilience and keep you emotionally strong till you find a better solution.

When chips are down and you feel that as if the entire Universe is against you, it’s natural to harbour this feeling. But for once, sit back. Sit back and ponder whether brooding over the situation will help. Instead, talk to people who you can confide in. Discuss your situation and the problem areas. May be few of your close people can offer a different insight to your situation and suggest ways to get out of the sticky wicket.

There are people who had quit the race a few yards before the finishing line. There are students who have committed suicide thinking they might fail, but when the results were out, they had actually cleared it. There is a very famous singer in India, who contemplated suicide, thinking nothing was going right for him. Only a week later he got an offer to cut his album which became a super-duper hit.

Developing resilience during these times is an essential ingredient in helping you to bounce back from and over the many small, medium and larger challenges that come our way when dealing with the adversities in life. Resilience is a part of our human DNA – South African, Australian, European, Indian, African, American, no matter where you come from. It is definitely there in each one of us.

Life is full of amazing twists and turns. You really do not know what is there in store for you in the very next moment. A perfectly stable situation can get destabilized by a single accident or loss. A totally hopeless situation may make a great turnaround with a sudden opportunity. Hang in there when you are in a crisis or loss with resilience and hope till you find a solution.

So my dear friends hang on. Life is a cycle. If you have gone down in your rotation of the wheel, you are bound to come up. You can conquer the world if you believe in yourself." ~ Anthony Sunny Kunneth
